The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is the peak body for consumer participation and community involvement at Eastern Health. The committee aims to assist Eastern Health build consumer and community views into all levels of its operations, planning and policy development and to keep the Eastern Health Board abreast of the needs and perspectives of the community it serves.

Chaired by Board Director Cr Robert Chong, the CAC currently has seven dedicated community representatives who join senior managers across Eastern Health, including the Chief Executive Officer. Community members are appointed as individuals rather than as organisational representatives but they bring knowledge of the opinions and policies of some community groups.

Consistent with the Terms of Reference, the CAC has established three areas of interest and some of the major tasks completed are detailed below.

Quality of Care

• Service developments in Palliative Care, Respecting Patient Choices
• Working party for the Quality of Care Report
• Representatives participate in the Quality Committee

Communicate with Community

• Membership on the Wantirna Health, Yarra Ranges Health and Box Hill Hospital redevelopment Community Advisory Groups
• Participated in communication and consultation with community in the completion of the Eastern Health Strategic Plan

Transcultural Issues

• Demonstrated input into policy on Sacred Space
• Established a profile of staff that can assist with language support

The CAC have recently been asked to contribute to a number of other project committees including:
- Division 2 ESOP – Medication Administration Project
- Health Promotion committee

Consumer involvement ensures that accessible health care services are of a high quality and responsive to the needs of the community. If you are undertaking new projects or developing policies that impact on services, it may be worthwhile to engage with the CAC. The Community Relations Department have access to a community register which details community members who may be interested in getting involved in your project.
