A unified approach to Breast Cancer management has been developed in Eastern Health over the last 5 years. The service is still continuing to develop. This development is overseen by a monthly working party meeting, which includes clinicians, nursing staff, research and data staff and management.

Our mission statement is:

  • To provide state of the art medical management for all stages of breast cancer and benign breast disease
  • To provide optimum support to patients in all situations
  • To provide high class information services
  • To provide convenient access for all patients to all services including allied health services (e.g. lymphoedema services, psychology services, genetic services etc.)
  • To provide services that are geographically appropriate

4. Chemotherapy Day Centre

A fulltime Day Oncology Centre is available at both Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals. All standard breast cancer treatments are available at both sites. A Hospital in the Home service operates at Box Hill Hospital for appropriate treatments.

6. Multidisciplinary Care

Multidisciplinary team meetings have occurred fortnightly at Maroondah for over 14 years, and monthly at Box Hill for 6 years. Both these meetings are for discussion of management of all early and locally advanced breast cancer patients, and include radiology and pathology review.

A fortnightly Advanced Breast Cancer multidisciplinary meeting was started in March 2003. Advanced Breast Cancer patients are now cared for by a team including a wide range of clinicians and support nurses at both Hospitals.

7. Oncology Inpatient Unit

At both Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals there is an Oncology Unit with in patient beds; at BHH staffed by Oncology trainee Registrars and at Maroondah by Physician trainee Registrars.

9. Clinical Research

At both Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals, Breast Oncology have been involved in clinical research for over ten years. Predominantly this is via the ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Group and involvement in multi-centre international studies in Early and Advanced Breast Cancer. Over two hundred patients have been involved in trials from our sites – a participation rate is far above the national average. Our program is partly supported by a tax deductible gift fund we set up some years ago.
