The Box Hill Hospital Respiratory Medicine Service provides management to patients with respiratory illness admitted to Box Hill Hospital, and conducts outpatient clinics on Tuesday and Friday.

Respiratory Laboratory

The Box Hill Hospital Respiratory Laboratory has become an integral part of the Respiratory medical practice in the Eastern Suburbs since its establishment in 1988.

The Laboratory is open 5 days per week and bookings can be made by contacting Mrs Joan Green, Respiratory Scientist on 9895 3390. Open Access referral forms can be obtained by contacting Mrs Green.

The Laboratory, situated adjacent to the Physiotherapy Department on the 3rd Floor of the Hospital, provides a comprehensive service to inpatients and outpatients including spirometry, lung volumes and DCLO measurements, bronchial provocation testing (to diagnose asthma) and blood gas estimation.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. This new service has been established in co-operation with Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nutrition services at Box Hill Hospital to recondition outpatients whose respiratory illness has given rise to excessive immobility and under-performance in various contexts. Access to the program is via referral to the Respiratory Outpatient Clinic.

Bronchoscopy Service. Inpatient and Outpatient Fibre optic Bronchoscopy is conducted weekly and otherwise as dictated by urgency of particular cases. Referral to Respiratory Outpatients Clinic is required for assessment.

Sleep Unit

It is hoped to establish a sleep medicine unit at Box Hill Hospital in the near future, to provide care for patients with sleep-disturbed breathing.
