About Birralee Maternity Services

Birralee provides several models of care to women and are based on the woman’s choice and the most appropriate care for her individual needs. All models have a strong women-centred approach and are team based.

Students will be members of a team assigned to care for women through their pregnancy, birth, post natal and home support period, thus ensuring some continuity of care for women and their families. This team approach is utilised for all women, whether predominantly midwifery or medical care is required, and includes GP shared care. The Know Your Midwife/caseload model provides greater opportunity for continuity of care.

Post Graduate Midwifery Training

Birralee maternity offers clinical placements to Div. 1 nurses enrolled on a graduate diploma of midwifery training program. Students will be able to participate in a paid employment model, while also working in a supernumerary capacity.

During your clinical placement, you will be based in antenatal, birthing and post natal wards, where your experience will be gained.

Rotations to antenatal clinics, lactation support, Midcare (home visiting) and our Special Care Nursery are also part of your placement.

Preceptors, a clinical support midwife and a clinical educator, provide support to ensure that your midwifery skills are developed in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our current University partners for Post Graduate Midwifery training are RMIT and Deakin.
Information on entry requirements, course content and the application process is made direct to the university of your choice.
