To
ensure the best patient care possible, ward 1 East is a fully
equipped ward specially designed for orthopaedic patients. For
convenience, it is divided into two independent specialist units
(i.e. half of the patients share one group of doctors and surgeons).
This enables the specialist staff to get to know each of their
patients more personally.
There
is a high level of staff contact. Patients are seen by their Resident
and Registrar (see staff) every morning,
and at other times of the day as is necessary. The nurses on 1
East are in constant contact with their patients.
In
addition, patients recovering from surgery have consultations
with physiotherapists daily, and if it is required,
with occupation therapists, dietitians, social workers, and general
medical physicians (plus many more).
To
help monitor patients, the unit has access to a state of the art
pathology service. It also utilises Box Hill Hospital's renowned
Medical Imaging Service.
