The History of Box Hill Hospital

In 1943 the Box Hill Hospital Committee of Management first met to start raising funds to build a new community hospital which we now know as Box Hill Hospital.  Box Hill Hospital is now over 60 years old.

Of all the Melbourne metropolitan hospitals Box Hill can claim to most closely reflect its community. Not only are there traditional hospital services but also significant maternity and paediatric services. It had an important nursing school, and for many years ran the major training program for new General Practitioners in Victoria. Box Hill Hospital has associations with Melbourne, Monash and Deakin Universities.

Helen Penrose and Catherine Waterhouse, Melbourne based professional history writers, have collaborated with staff to produce a book on the history of Box Hill Hospital: Life is to be Cared For. The book is a lively account, around 180 pages profusely illustrated with black and white photographs.

The book is available to purchase for $50.00 from the Box Hill Hospital Kiosk or the Pharmacy.
