Hand Therapy Services
- Comprehensive evaluation of the hand condition - including range of
movement, assessment of muscle function and evaluation of sensory and
motor nerve injury / recovery
- Treatment with the use of custom made thermoplastic splints, involving
prescription of static or dynamic (lively) splints
- Oedema and scar management
- Sensory re-education, scar management (including desensitisation)
- Exercise/ activity prescription
- Pain control
Referrals to Hand Therapy
The Hand Therapy service is available to inpatients and outpatients
of Box Hill Hospital. This service is available to patients attending
the outpatient clinics, such as Plastics, Orthopaedic, Rheumatology,
Neurological, Ante-natal or Staff Clinic.
Any outpatients with long term / chronic conditions will be referred
to the Peter James Centre for extended rehabilitation.
A patient from the community with a hand injury or condition needs to
be initially referred to the relevant Medical or Surgical outpatient
clinic, where once assessed by a Doctor or Surgeon a referral to Hand
Therapy may be made.
Cost of Service
A fee schedule exists for community patients over the age of 18 years.
Community patients are any patients seen for more than 30 days following
the initial consultation with the hand therapist. Overseas visitors
are charged from day 1 of treatment.
$11.00 per visit
$7.00 per visits for concessional cardholders
