Departmental Profile

Box Hill Hospital Emergency Department takes great pride in its efficiency, safety, and ability to provide satisfaction to both patients and staff.

Box Hill Hospital is a tertiary-level provider of care within Eastern Health and the Emergency Department treats about 40,000 annual attendances. Over 25% of our patients are children. A complete range of general medical and surgical and mental health casemix is seen by the ED which is also a metropolitan trauma hospital. About 35% of patients are admitted. The Emergency Department runs an 8 bed short stay unit.

Vacancies exist at times for staff within the Emergency Department.

Our department has a strong commitment to staff development and our senior management group provides active leadership in personal development for all staff.

A structured program of performance management is a collaborative part of our department that ensures the needs of all staff are met in professional and personal development.

We keenly support staff involvement in research, conference attendance and presentation, course attendance, and hospital developmental activities. The department has always enjoyed a reputation for excellence in emergency medicine and nursing training and continues to have an active profile in teaching, research & publication.

General Medical Staff

Box Hill Emergency Department is staffed by Emergency Physicians, Registrars, Hospital Medical Officers and Sessional staff. We aim to attract experienced senior staff who are committed to emergency medicine and who have a strong focus on excellence in emergency medicine training.

Box Hill ED is accredited for the full 2 years of advanced training in emergency training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. In addition, all non-ED components of training are offered in our training program. Trainees are given ample time to participate in the comprehensive Primary and Fellowship examination programs offered in Eastern Health. Training is supported by a full-time FACEM clinical educator (Dr Jenny Brookes and Dr Jo Dalgliesh). ACEM examiners and exam committee members participate in the teaching sessions.
