The Department of Cardiology at Box Hill Hospital provides a Coronary Care Unit for the management of acute cardiac conditions as well as a Chest Pain Observation Unit. Swan-Ganz catheters and intra-aortic balloon pumps can be managed in the Coronary Care Unit. Telemetry units are available for cardiac monitoring of patients in general ward beds.

The Cardiology Unit provides a consultative service for patients under the care of other units as well as managing its own inpatients.

There are modern, well equipped facilities available to perform a variety of non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on outpatients, day case patients and inpatients. These include:

• Echocardiography (including transoesophageal echocardiography)
• Exercise stress echocardiography and Dobutamine stress echocardiography
• ECG’s
• Exercise stress testing
• Holter monitoring
• Tilt table testing and nuclear cardiology (Thallium stress testing)
• Temporary pacing wires / permanent pacemakers. There is a pacemaker review clinic.

There are full cardiac catheterisation facilities available on site with the ability to perform

• Angioplasty (PTCA)
• Brachiocephalic Interventions
• Cardiac Catheterisation (Coronary Angiogram)
• Carotid Evaluation and Stenting
• Coronary Stenting
• Peripheral Artery Stenting
• Renal Artery Stenting
• Septal Ablation
• Right heart catheterisation
• Intra-aortic balloon pump insertion A well developed Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is also in operation and accepts referrals from inside and outside the hospital. Box Hill Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for cardiac patients from the Eastern region of Melbourne.
