The Angliss Hospital Day Surgery Unit is designed for people having operations or procedures that require only a short stay in hospital.

Recent improvements in surgical technology now enable surgeons to perform operations with less invasive techniques. This, combined with the new safer anaesthetic agents, allow you to have your operation and go home the same day. Every member of our team will be dedicated to making sure that your stay is pleasant and comfortable.

Report to the reception desk at the hospital main entrance and they will organize someone to escort you to Day Surgery, which is located near the Operating Suite. Day Surgery is open from 7.00am to 8.30pm Monday to Friday and occasional Saturdays.

The Unit includes a reception, waiting area, interview room, day ward and lounge with recliners.

Due to limited space only one person should accompany you to the unit, except in the case of children, where both parents may accompany the child having the procedure.

 Before admission

At your consultation with your surgeon, you will have received all the necessary pre-admission documentation. This needs to be completed and forwarded to the Angliss Hospital as soon as possible.

On the business day before your surgery, (between 11am and 5pm) a staff member will contact you regarding a number of details, especially your admission and fasting times.

· Eating & Drinking Instructions

Patients who are scheduled for surgery in the morning must not eat or drink anything from midnight the night before surgery.

Patients who are scheduled for surgery in the afternoon must not eat or drink anything from 7.30am on the day of surgery.

· What To Bring

Medicare Card
All relevant X-Rays
Dressing Gown and Slippers

· Medications

If you are on regular medication you will be instructed by the pre-admission nurse what tablets to take on the day of surgery. Tablets must be taken with as little water as possible.

· Smoking

Patients are advised not to smoke for at least 24 hours prior to their operation. This will help in your recovery following the anaesthetic.

Day of surgery

On arrival to the Day Surgery Unit you will be greeted by the Ward Clerk who will process your admission, and direct you to the waiting room. A nurse will take you into the interview room and complete your admission. Please let the staff know at this time if there has been any change in your general condition or medication since you filled in your pre-admission paperwork.

Following surgery you will be recovered either on a trolley or a recliner until staff are happy for you to get up and get dressed. You will be given some light refreshments before discharge.

Before you leave the Day Surgery Unit, you will be given written post-operative care instructions regarding physical activity, dressing, medication, appointment time and emergency advice for any queries or concerns.

You will need to rest for at least 12-24 hours following your anaesthetic. Your surgeon will advise you of the length of time required to recover, according to the procedure and individual needs.

You must not drive any vehicle, drink alcohol, operate machinery or make any important decisions during the first 24 hours after the anaesthetic.

One of the nursing staff will be in contact with you by phone to follow up on your recovery. This is a good opportunity to discuss any concerns. Please let the nursing staff know if this is not appropriate
