| The team comprises of a Movement Disorders specialist Neurologist, Nurse, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Pathologist, and Social Worker. Other health professionals can be called in, or the team can assist you to access these if needed to advise on particular issues.
The program is based in a clinic, where visiting patients are assessed by the team. These assessments are sometimes for the purpose of diagnosing the cause of the movement disorder, or can be to provide advice on treatment and management of a recently diagnosed or longstanding disorder. The team provide training for the patient, family and other carers using specialised strategies that address functional issues for those experiencing difficulty in daily life.
The Parkinson’s Clinical Nurse Consultant has specialist knowledge of Parkinson’s, and is able to assist people to manage their condition from diagnosis through the stages of the disease.
Information on the disease, the treatment and resources is available. The Nurse provides a link between the much needed services of the Neurologist, the GP and specialist Allied Health professionals. Assistance for those newly diagnosed is a key role.
People accessing the Movement Disorders Clinic need to have a referral from their GP or Hospital Doctor.
No referral is required for people wishing to access the Parkinson’s Clinical Nurse Consultant, and home visits may be arranged within the area for those who have difficulty travelling.
